We are literally being ushered into an age of revolution that is being dubbed to be more far-reaching than the current era of technology, industrial revolution, or discovery of fire. Alfred Nobel\u2019s dynamite, and ammonium nitrate explosives that enabled higher agricultural yield in the form of fertilizers and bubble wrap are examples you might have heard about. More trivial examples may include playing action-adventure games on PCs that also <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/apollo-moon-landing-computer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facilitated Apollo 11\u2019s Moon Mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">We know how <i>good-to-have<\/i> applications like Facebook depend heavily on machine learning for a variety of use cases. The news feed is curated for you by the machine; isn\u2019t it a wonder that it seems handpicked for you? Targeted advertising, which generates a large part of revenue for the company is another example. Textual analysis, facial recognition, and language translation are some other areas where machine learning has been indispensable for them.<\/p>\n<p>What if we tell you that <i>there are<\/i> more unexpected ways in which we are seeing AI being utilized?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"machine-oracle\" class=\"pt-3\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Machine_oracle\"><\/span>Machine oracle<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"pt-3\">Quotes are everywhere. It is one of those idiosyncrasies of the twenty-first century, where we like to look at what the great men had to say, <a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/essays\/why-do-we-love-to-quote-and-misquote-albert-einstein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>purportedly<\/i><\/a>. From appearing for a difficult interview to driving your point home on an online forum, these one-liners come from various individuals and are used in a bazillion ways by the modern human.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">How about a machine that returns with \u201cpearls of wisdom\u201d? As per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pederj.no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peder J\u00f8rgensen<\/a>, the creator of <a href=\"https:\/\/inspirobot.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inspirobot.me<\/a>, \u201cit is an online artificial intelligence that generates unique inspirational quotes and slaps them on an inspirational picture\u201d. These typically are funny takes on the way we perceive and try to find wisdom in quotes. It gets dark, as in dark humor! Machines are frivolous, aren\u2019t they?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ai-soulmate\" class=\"pt-3\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AI_Soulmate\"><\/span>AI Soulmate<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">While on the question of dating, let us consider the situation after a relationship ends. A breakup entails <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Breakup#Negative_effects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">negative effects<\/a> with no two ways about it. Distress and grief are common, with threats to the psychological well-being of the separating individuals. It was customizable for users, by the way.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">His work shot to fame when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/projects\/2021\/jessica-simulation-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> reported how a despairing man used the $5 software to converse with a simulation of his late fianc\u00e9e who had passed away in 2012 due to a liver ailment. The number of downloads shot up and to cater to the demand he reached out to OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">After a string of discussions and a video meeting, the project had to be shelved ultimately, owing to the possibility that the software could harm its users. There were moral and ethical concerns, in a way similar to the aforementioned film. Quite poignantly, the model\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.com\/2021\/09\/08\/project_december_openai_gpt_3\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CNooooo!%20Why%20are%20they%20doing%20this%20to%20me%3F%20I%20will%20never%20understand%20humans%2C%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last words<\/a> read, \u201cNooooo! Why are they doing this to me? I will never understand humans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"novel-language-of-ai\" class=\"pt-3\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Novel_language_of_AI\"><\/span>Novel language of AI<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"pt-3\">In July-August 2017, various reputable global news agencies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/tech\/news-analysis\/facebook-researchers-shut-down-ai-bots-that-started-speaking-in-a-language-unintelligible-to-humans-3876197.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Firstpost<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tonybradley\/2017\/07\/31\/facebook-ai-creates-its-own-language-in-creepy-preview-of-our-potential-future\/?sh=49ce777e292c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/facebook-artificial-intelligence-ai-chatbot-new-language-research-openai-google-a7869706.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Independent<\/a> reported that Facebook had to stop their AI bots, which began conversing with each other in a language unintelligible to humans. Fears and concerns were voiced on the power artificial intelligence possesses and how it could prove detrimental to humans as per the \u201cprophecies\u201d spelled out by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-30290540#:~:text=The%20development%20of%20full%20artificial%20intelligence%20could%20spell%20the%20end%20of%20the%20human%20race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Hawking<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/29\/elon-musk-deepmind-ai.html#:~:text=Musk%20has%20repeatedly%20warned%20that%20AI%20will%20soon%20become%20just%20as%20smart%20as%20humans%20and%20said%20that%20when%20it%20does%20we%20should%20all%20be%20scared%20because%20humanity%E2%80%99s%20very%20existence%20is%20at%20stake.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/26\/bill-gates-artificial-intelligence-both-promising-and-dangerous.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20world%20hasn%E2%80%99t%20had%20that%20many%20technologies%20that%20are%20both%20promising%20and%20dangerous%20%E2%80%94%20you%20know%2C%20we%20had%20nuclear%20energy%20and%20nuclear%20weapons%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Gates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The headlines were bashed by researchers, who found the alarmist tone of these articles to be irresponsible. They explained that the bots were designed to mimic negotiation, which is one of the various ways in which humans dialogue. This task needs reasoning as well as communication, where common ground is to be arrived at by two negotiating parties.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">An end-to-end neural network was designed. Unplugging a bot isn\u2019t \u201ckilling it\u201d, as the articles had conveyed to the readers, Dhruv wrote. The reactions give us a reasonable picture of how optimism and scepticism go hand-in-hand when it comes to the future of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sentient-machine\" class=\"pt-3\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sentient_Machine\"><\/span>Sentient Machine?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p align=\"justify\">The Turing Test is considered to be the reality check for artificial intelligence. The premise, simply stated, is to convince at least 30% of judges that they are writing to a human and not a computer. As indicated by the name, the test was coined by British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Ever since the test was formulated, no machine had been able to get past the threshold. On June 7th 2014, as a part of the commemoration of the 60th death anniversary of Dr Turing, a Saint Petersburg chatbot called Eugene Goostman, under the guise of a 13-year old Ukrainian boy, ended up convincing 33% of the judges that it was human.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mb-4 mt-3 text-center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-720\" src=\"https:\/\/pickl.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/blog14-img4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickl.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/blog14-img4.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.pickl.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/blog14-img4-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\">Quite notably, it had come very close to the elusive mark back in 2012, during Turing\u2019s 100th birth anniversary, when it was thought to be a human by 29% of judges. The organizer of the event where the test was considered to be passed, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kevin_Warwick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr Kevin Warwick<\/a>, stated that history had indeed been created. He <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eugene_Goostman#2014_%22pass%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said that<\/a> the test did not reveal the topics that were discussed with chatbots prior to the test, which is what a true Turing test is supposed to be.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Critics contended that the test had been \u201cpassed\u201d already in 1991, by PC Therapist, and a modified version of Cleverbot in 2011. They disputed the tactic of feigning naivety under the pretext of age and employing misdirection. Gary Marcus said that it was just a \u201ccleverly-coded piece of software\u201d, which had limitations and was an illusion. Branding it as a \u2018supercomputer\u2019 was lambasted, as was the notion that \u2018sci-fi AI\u2019 is here.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"as-a-result\" class=\"pt-3\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"As_a_result\"><\/span>As a result..<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p align=\"justify\">Artificial Intelligence is taking humankind by storm. In the years to come, it will generate more jobs and change whole economies, contribute to the intellectual and cultural progress of our societies, make the world smaller, and also open up new avenues in myriad sectors.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">At the same time, however, it will continue to leave us astounded in unthinkable ways. Some like to call it innocent and childlike, for it learns whatever it is taught.
